Young Drivers on NY Roadways

YOUNG DRIVERS ON NEW YORK ROADWAYS

Young drivers continue to be overrepresented in crashes (3% of licensed drivers vs. 8% of drivers involved in fatal and personal injury crashes).  Covering the years 2016-2020, the study discusses characteristics of young driver crashes, the drivers involved and tickets issued to these drivers.

Key Findings

  • 107 persons were killed in crashes involving young drivers in 2020, compared to 108 in 2016.
  • 47% of the young drivers ticketed in 2020 received speeding violations, compared to 35% of all drivers ticketed.
  • Young drivers involved in F & PI crashes are more likely to engage in unsafe or illegal behavior such as inattention or distraction, failure to yield, following too closely, speeding, and not wearing seat belts.
