Jerry Miller Appointed Director of ITSMR
The University at Albany’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerard “Jerry” Miller to the position of Director, effective July 1, 2021. He will succeed Debra Rood who has held the position since 1999.
Jerry has been a Project Director at ITSMR for the past five years and has been primarily responsible for the development and implementation of the Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Data Entry & Management System. The DRE system is a comprehensive system that was designed to assist and manage the DRE program for specialized law enforcement officers who are trained to detect drug-impaired drivers. Jerry has been directly responsible for the expansion of the program and the implementation of the system throughout the U.S. In addition, Jerry has been serving as the program manager for sponsored traffic safety research and evaluation projects primarily in the area of impaired driving and represents ITSMR on the multi-agency Impaired Driving Advisory Council.
Prior to joining ITSMR, Jerry worked for the State of New York for 15 years in various capacities, including serving as a Program Representative for the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee where he also held the position of State Coordinator for New York’s DRE program. Jerry began his professional career as a Police Officer in 1993 in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and a Master of Public Administration from the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, SUNY Albany.
