The Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR) is a not-for-profit, university-based research center dedicated to improving highway safety.
Affiliated with the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR) was established in 1978 to provide a link between the State University of New York and New York State government that would facilitate the application of academic expertise to the mitigation and solution of traffic safety problems. From its inception, ITSMR has played a key role in New York becoming a national leader in developing legislative and programmatic countermeasures for major highway safety issues.
The seat belt use rate in New York State has stayed at or above 90% for over a decade. Based on the 2022 survey conducted by ITSMR 92% of New Yorkers buckle up when in a passenger vehicle. This survey was not conducted in 2020.
The Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research offers a variety of services to local, state and national agencies and organizations seeking to reduce motor vehicle crashes, fatalities and injuries.
