History

Affiliated with the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, the Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research (ITSMR) was established in 1978 to provide a link between the State University of New York and New York State government. The objective was to integrate academic expertise into state policy and program development. From its inception, ITSMR has played a key role in New York becoming a national leader in the development of legislative and programmatic countermeasures for major highway safety issues.

“Utilizing research for traffic safety is of paramount importance as it provides a solid foundation for evidence-based decision-making and the development of effective strategies. Research allows us to understand the root causes of traffic crashes, identify high-risk areas, and evaluate the impact of various interventions. This knowledge enables policymakers, traffic engineers, and law enforcement agencies to implement targeted measures and interventions that address specific challenges and improve overall traffic safety. Furthermore, research helps in evaluating the effectiveness of implemented measures and identifying areas that require further improvement. By harnessing research findings and translating them into practical solutions, we can strive towards reducing crashes, injuries, and fatalities on our roads, ultimately creating safer environments for all road users.”
