Roadway Fatalities

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported a total of 42,795 roadway fatalities in 2022. Fatalities continue to rise above pre-pandemic levels and New York State is no exception.  ITSMR provides research and analytical support to assist state and local policymakers to develop strategies to reverse this unsettling trend.  Together we can reduce fatalities and improve the safety of roadways for all users.

Fatalities on New York Roadways: A Decade Of Progress

This ten-year study (2009-2018) examined changes in a number of types of fatalities, from pedestrian fatalities to fatalities in speed-related or alcohol-related crashes.

Key Findings

  • 936 motor vehicle fatalities occurred in NYS in 2018, down from 1,148 in 2009, while fatalities nationwide increased from 33,883 in 2009 to 36,750 in 2018.
  • NYS fatalities per 100M VMT dropped from 0.86 in 2009 to 0.76 in 2018, compared to the national rate which was basically unchanged (1.15 in 2009 and 1.16 in 2018).

Developed to provide broader access to New York’s traffic safety data, the TSSR contains motor vehicle crash data obtained from the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Accident Information System (AIS) over the past 10 years, including preliminary data for the current year.
